Product update for multiple organizations

Since the start of Nectir, we’ve always been focused on building a scalable, reliable, and secure product that can keep up with the needs of thousands of instructors and students. Our engineers have been hard at work over the past few months and have made a huge leap towards this ideal. We are now excited to introduce our new multi-tenant system!

What is multi-tenant?

Nectir was originally built to accommodate only a handful of workspaces at a time. Now instead of having to manage each school individually, we can now manage all workspaces through a shared infrastructure. Some benefits to this new architecture:

  • Easily scale to hundreds of thousands of users across a seemingly infinite number of workspaces
  • Allow users to quickly switch between different Nectir workspaces
  • Make it faster and easier to deploy frequent product updates and fixes
  • Create better infrastructure security
  • Simplify management of workspaces for community managers

How does this affect you?

Since we are now consolidating Nectir into a few core resources, this requires us to migrate existing data to the new system. This will require us to temporarily disable access each workspace, and migrate over to our multi-tenant system. All your data is backed up in several backups, so no need to worry about losing any messages. Here is what will happen:

  • Between Tuesday, August 2nd and Thursday, August 4th, between the hours of 4AM-4PM, we will turn off access to each Nectir workspace temporarily. You will not be able to access Nectir to send or receive messages during this time.
  • Any given school should only be down for 2-3 hours while we migrate your accounts, so once it’s done, you will be able to use Nectir normally.

What changes will I see?

New domain name

  • Instead of accessing Nectir at yourschool.nectir.io, everyone will now be redirected to the same domain: app.nectir.io. This will be the domain that you access Nectir through for all organizations you are a part of.

New functionality for switching between different organizations

  • If you’re logged into multiple schools or organizations with the same email, you will be able to quickly switch between them with our new “Organizations” menu.

Some things to be aware of:

  • If you are part of multiple organizations, but use different emails for each, you will need to log out of one email and log back in with another to access your different accounts. We are working on a way to make this easier, so please let us know if you have any thoughts!
