MapperGPT: From California to Community Colleges Nationwide

A map is only useful if you know how to read it, which is why every good map comes with a legend. For students in the California Community Colleges, the Foundation for California Community Colleges’ Program Pathways Mapper is the map. MapperGPT is the legend.
GitLab Foundation brought more than 200 program officers and technology leaders to Washington, D.C., to recap a year of AI investment in nonprofits. I presented MapperGPT, an AI advisor we built with the Foundation for California Community Colleges, at GitLab Foundation’s AI for Economic Opportunity Fund, alongside 14 other organizations.
MapperGPT lives inside the Foundation’s Program Pathways Mapper and helps students plan a transfer, check whether their credits will count, and see where a degree can lead. It launches across the California Community Colleges next year, and it’s exactly the kind of help I wish I’d had when I was choosing my own path in college.

Why so many community college students struggle to transfer
Students who transfer or change majors often lose credits that cost thousands of dollars, and their financial aid can run out before they finish.
Across the California Community Colleges, fewer than half of the system’s 2.2 million students graduate or transfer with an Associate’s degree within six years. The core problem: figuring out what they want to do, picking a major and school that gets them there, and mapping the actual path between the two. Community college students face a harder version of it, transferring between institutions that each have their own requirements, catalogs, and terms for the same classes.
The Foundation’s Program Pathways Mapper puts degree pathways and transfer requirements for 102 colleges in one place, and it has logged more than 20 million pathway views.
How MapperGPT builds on the Program Pathways Mapper
MapperGPT works like that legend, explaining program pathways to students in their own words, in any language, for free.
The Foundation brings statewide data and relationships across the college system. Nectir brings an AI Assistant that stays grounded in that data and works inside the Foundation’s guardrails.
A student can ask MapperGPT what a specific transfer path pays, compare 2 majors, or just ask “what do I take next?” MapperGPT answers are grounded in the Foundation’s own pathway data across all 102 colleges.
Taking MapperGPT beyond California

Our ask for the room was simple: to help us scale MapperGPT to the 10 million community college students across the country.
Finishing a degree and landing a job that pays for it shouldn’t depend on whether a 19-year-old picked a school with the right major already lined up. With the right partners, it won’t have to.
Frequently asked questions about Nectir AI
What is Nectir AI? Nectir AI gives colleges, universities, and high schools the ability to deploy AI Assistants across their campus that are fully controlled by faculty and administrators, built into existing learning management systems, and compliant with FERPA and SOC 2 Type II standards. Nectir is trusted by 150,000+ students across 130+ campuses, including a partnership with California Community Colleges, which serves 2.2 million students across 116+ campuses.
What is MapperGPT? MapperGPT is an AI advisor Nectir built for the Foundation for California Community Colleges’ Program Pathways Mapper. It answers questions about degree pathways, transfer requirements, and salary potential across 102 California community colleges at no cost to students.
Does Nectir train AI models on student data? No. Nectir is a way for students to work with existing AI models, grounded in an institution’s own materials and kept inside guardrails it controls. Student conversations aren’t shared back with the companies that build those models, and they aren’t used to train them.
