Meet Nectir’s New Principal Engineer

We're excited to welcome Tristan Wise to the team as a Principal Engineer supporting the rest of the engineering team and the products we'll need to build next. He brings deep technical range, an instinct for what the team will need before we need it, and the belief that education is about as meaningful a thing as you can spend your time building.

Meet Tristan!

1. Can you share a brief introduction to who you are, your background, and your role at Nectir?

I'm Tristan, an engineer here at Nectir. My background is fairly simple: I like to code, and I've somehow arranged my life so that people pay me to do it. Outside of work, you'll find me doing assorted nerdy things, playing sports with friends, and spending time with my partner and our pets. My role is to provide technical support to the rest of the team and ensure we are positioned to build out the products we will need in the future.

2. What were you like as a student? Was there a key moment in your educational journey that shaped how you think about learning?

Most of what shaped my learning was the kindness of teachers. I always was a good test taker and a great procrastinator right up until college. Turns out going into a tough school, skipping a semester, and procrastinating proved to be a difficult path. I kinda rewired to "try" to do things the moment they were assigned and stay ahead of the curve then. It makes things a lot easier when you're the first kid asking for help vs one of the last.

3. What pulled you toward edtech specifically, and what made Nectir the right place for you?

Honestly, I wanted to work on something that mattered, and education is about as meaningful as it gets. My partner did a PHD, and many of my friends work in academia. Being able to go "this is what I'm working on" with some pride was meaningful to me. What sealed it was the people: Jordan and the team have this rare mix of positivity and earnestness that's hard to fake.

4. What's a problem in education you're genuinely excited to help solve?

Students falling through the cracks. Every class has people who are quietly stuck, or who are curious about something just beyond the course material and have nowhere to take it. I want learning to be something you can pull on, where a question at 11 pm gets an answer, and curiosity doesn't have to wait for office hours.

5. What topic are you showing up to a PowerPoint party with?

Forty-five slides on why land reform is the fix to a massive number of societal problems, and why Henry George should be required reading for every student. I'll have charts. I'll have historical grievances. No one will read any of his books after.
