The Real ROI of a Course Assistant is the Students Who Finish

What it costs to lose a student

When a student doesn't finish their degree, an institution loses more than a single enrollment. Yes, they lose the tuition and the return on the costs spent to recruit and enroll the student. But the hardest loss for both students and colleges is when students miss out on the outcomes and opportunities they came for.

Two peer-reviewed studies from Los Angeles Pacific University measured the outcomes for students who worked with a Course Assistant grounded in their own coursework.

In a randomized controlled trial of 92 students, the group with access to the Assistant earned an average GPA of 3.34, compared with 2.77 for the group without it, and scored 88.3% on their final coursework compared with 77.9%. Those same students reported higher self-efficacy (4.3 vs. 3.77) and a statistically significant increase in their intrinsic motivation to learn.

A second, much larger study, covering 2,090 student-course records across 99 courses, found the same direction of effect, with a 3.28 GPA for Assistant users compared to 3.05 for non-users, and the two groups were matched on age, gender, and ethnicity.

Those are academic outcomes that connect to retention. The studies themselves make the connection, noting what higher ed has understood for years: that intrinsic motivation and sustained engagement are among the strongest predictors of whether a student persists instead of dropping out. The grades, confidence, and motivation the research measured are also what a student weighs when deciding whether to enroll next term again. Improving those outcomes is closely tied to improving the odds that a student finishes what they started.

The behavior that comes before staying enrolled

Beyond improving grade outcomes, using Course Assistants has become a behavior beyond what is required. Adoria Williams, who teaches information literacy at Merritt College, tied that directly to completion:

The question worth asking in the budget meeting

Put together, treating a Course Assistant purely as a cost gets the problem backward. The genuinely expensive thing an institution already carries is attrition, paid for in tuition that never arrives and in outcomes students never reach.
